The September 8th, 2005 meeting which was organised by the RFID Platform Nederland, was called “RFID and the logistic chain: a day in a DC”. It was held at the Schuitema distribution centre.
Addressing an audience of about 60, most of them being members of RFID Platform, Schuitema Holding's Logistics Manager Mr. R. van Mierlo and Capgemini's Managing Consultant Mr. M. Flederus gave inside information in the floating RFID Pilots at Schuitema's since 2001 as well as in the emerging RFID Pilots.

Enthousiast

Schuitema presents themselves as an innovative company having so much energy and vision that even a critically listener becomes enthusiast and interested in RFID Projects. According to Schuitema the already floating Pilots have been ment for experiencing and learning how these technics can solve bottlenecks in the company's operational processes. Thus in co-operation with other parties, coming from the logistics as well as from the technical corner.

Project Management

Mr. Flederus proved in his speech that Capgemini is well capable to form and manage an innovating Project like this. The managing aspects are carried out untill a fully operational system is installed and ready for analyses.

But we have to wait

Despite this optimism we have to wait for a epoch-making Supply Chain Pilot, in which a Dutch supermarket company will work with standardised EPC Global Gen2 tags. At Schuitema's tests will be done with transponders tagged to a managable number of goods carriers - e.g. crates for packed fresh vegetables. With its results one hopes to put the next step unto what is called the Nirvana: the moment a consumer walks with his uptopped shopcar through a gate and at the same time all his purchaseds goods are automatically paid for, booked off with the supermarket's inventory and booked on to an ordering list for the wholesaler.
To be continued!
